Inspect your space heater for cracked or damaged cords and broken plugs. Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets and never into an extension cord or power strip.
To prevent space heater fires, take the following steps:
- Keep flammable objects at least three feet from all heating equipment.
- Keep children and pets at least three feet from all heating equipment.
- Inspect chimneys before use each winter.
- Never leave portable heaters or space heaters running when you leave a room.
- Install and maintain Carbon Dioxide alarms in rooms with heating devices.
- If you smell gas, leave your home and call the fire department immediately.
