On average, 52,000 fires caused by heating equipment are reported every year. Have your HVAC system inspected regularly to ensure the system is functioning without problems.

Space heaters are a major safety issue for homes: stationary or portable space heaters are responsible for 86% of home heating fire deaths.

Inspect your space heater for cracked or damaged cords and broken plugs. Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets and never into an extension cord or power strip.

To prevent space heater fires, take the following steps:

  • Keep flammable objects at least three feet from all heating equipment.
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet from all heating equipment.
  • Inspect chimneys before use each winter.
  • Never leave portable heaters or space heaters running when you leave a room.
  • Install and maintain Carbon Dioxide alarms in rooms with heating devices.
  • If you smell gas, leave your home and call the fire department immediately.

Though most heating fires occur in the winter months, it is imperative to make sure all heating and air conditioning units are properly functioning, professionally installed, and safely used throughout the year. Download a safety tip sheet to keep and share.
